VON - Dark Gods: Seven Billion Slaves Album Review

If a legend, after a long time of inactivity gets back to work, it’s always a guess how that will turn out. In the case of the American black metal band VON it causes extra discussion, even amongst the biggest fans. For a lot of VON-followers it’s still a question if the rights of the name ‘VON’ belong to the only remaining band member VENIEN, or, as opponents say, to Von Goat. But let’s stick to the facts. While recently all the old demo material from VON was re-recorded and released on CD, now VON delivers a new album, the first in twenty years, with only new material. ‘Dark Gods: Seven Billion Slaves' is the first part of a trilogy, that VON fires at us in a short time. With the song 'Ancient Flesh of The Dark Gods' the band makes a wobbly start. When the song after 4 minutes finally goes all the way, the fast drums don't sound very tight. The album gets really good with the 4th song 'Dark Gods’, and from there on it’s only joy with songs like ‘MONSTER!’, ‘DevilWhore’, ‘iAmInHuMan' and 'RawRot’. Compared to bands as Blasphemy and Beherit (in the old days always named in one sentence with VON) these songs have the impact of a grenade. At a high pace and with a dark, obscure sound. Niiiiiiice!

Als legendes na een lange tijd van inactiviteit weer aan de slag gaan, is het altijd afwachval van de Amerikaanse black metalband VON zorgt dit, zelfs bij verstokte fans van weleer, voor extra discussie. Voor veel volgers is het namelijk discutabel of de rechten van de naam VON toe zouden moeten behoren aan het enig overgebleven lid VENIEN; tegenstanders opteren voor de vertakking Von Goat. Maar laten we bij de feiten blijven. Terwijl onlangs al het oude demomateriaal van VON openiew werd opgenomen en op CD werd uitgebracht, is hier voor het eerst sinds twintig jaar een album met volledig nieuw materiaal. ‘Dark Gods: Seven Billion Slaves' is het eerste deel van een trilogie, die VON binnen korte tijd op ons afvuurt. Met, “Ancient Flesh of The Dark Gods" maakt de band eed wat weifelende start. Wanneer het nummer na dik vier minuten eindelijk op gang komt, blijken de snelle drums niet helemaal strak ingespeeld te zijn. Het album wordt pas echt goed bij het vierde nummer "Dark Gods”, waarna het genieten is van songs als “MONSTER!”, “DevilWhore”, “iAmInHuMan”, en “RawRot”. Vergelijkbaar met bands als Blasphemy en Behrit, die vroeger vaak in een adem met VON werden genoemd, hakken dez nummers er in als een granaat. Op hoog tempo en met een grimmige sound.
