VON - Dark Gods: Seven Billion Slaves Album Review

Dark Gods: Seven Billion Slaves is the second full length album from American Black Metal pioneers, VON. I’m sure it seems odd that a band from the late 80’s would only be on their 2nd release, but the band has been inactive up until 2010, when they reunited for Armageddon Fest and decided to revive, VON, full time. Dark Gods starts a trilogy of new albums from the group, and starts with a very uncharacteristic pair of tracks that are long, slow, and sludgy; introducing the world to the Dark Gods, before returning to the sound that inspired bands like Enthroned and Burzum. I really like that VON has been paying attention and chosen to evolve with the genre, rather than making minor tweaks to their formula, as they did with their first release, Satanic Blood. At the same time VON, didn’t take advantage of any fancy new production, opting to keep things sounding tinny and raw, as a Black Metal album should. The other volumes of the Dark Gods trilogy are yet to be written, but seem to be full of promise.
