VON - Satanic Blood Album Review

Lots of blah-blah-blah about this album, mostly whether it’s “true VON” or not, but even if you were way into your shitty cassette dub back in the mid 90’s, you probably didn’t know who the core creative force in the band was. Everything about VON was shrouded. All that really matters now is whether the new VON is worthy or not. People too hung up on their own cultiness will say it’s not, but those sorts of people are hilarious and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

Freaks who liked the sub-basement primitivism of VON’s two early demos (one of which was also titled “Satanic Blood" and later heavily bootlegged) will recognize that the basic idea hasn’t changed; it’s still as simplistic and monomaniacal as before. Those same freaks will also notice that most of these songs are from the demos. (I know: again?) "Jesus Stain" is a new one, and it’s fine. Nothing remarkable, but totally VON-like in its lack of complexity and crawling-in-vomits aesthetic. It’s all recorded with a little more clarity than the early demos, but just a little-it’ll still be attractive to those preferring black metal that lurks exclusively in the necro zone.

If you not familiar with the peculiar delights of this band, think about them as the black metal equivalent of Mortician: repetitive, primitive, low-budget, ugly. VON’s songs play tricks on you, too-it’s all so lowbrow and bizarre that it starts to feel like high art after awhile. Ultimately, this couldn’t possibly have the same appeal as the early demos, and feeding the same songs to us yet again is totally redundant. It’s puzzling why this even exists-new material would have made more sense, but that’s also much riskier if you don’t want to gamble with your cult status. 6/10
