VON - Satanic Blood Album Review

Selected and dissected: VON

With the hyperbole, the legend and the fervor that has surrounded VON ever since that magazine article that erroneously had the letters standing for “Victory, Orgasm, and Nazis”, the release of “Satanic Blood” could seem like an anti-climax. When VON’s original recordings first saw the black of night in the early 90’s, they were something of a revelatory explosion of fury that sounded out-of-kilter with every more and refined polished extreme metal sounds of the day.

Following the reactivation in 2010, Jason ‘VENIEN” Ventura headed off to the studio, where a slew of tracks from the band’s demo years were re-recorded, alongside newer songs to produce what has been unveiled as “Satanic Blood”. 21 years ago, the songs were damn near unique in their classic viciousness. That the songs are still chaotic and vicious goes without saying: the sound is slightly more powerful, a touch more dense. Those qualities that gave VON a jolt-like poke in the eye might have become lost in 2012 amongst the sea of imitators, flatterers and competitors, but from newer opening track ‘Jesus Stain’ to the re-recorded classics such as ‘Veadtuck’ and ‘Christ Fire’, that VON’s taking a riff and, through repetition and backing it with forceful blasts of mayhemic blasphemy, turning it into a dizzying, hypnotic wave of fury, remains a calling card that is theirs alone, although sadly, the ritualistic bonus tracks do not quite capture a similar intensity to those metallically inclined. Yes, the allegation of a one-trick pony can certainly be made, but since when did that of the Ramones any harm
