VON - Dark Gods: Seven Billion Slaves Album Review

Credited with being the first USWCOBMB (decipher that one!), San Fran’s VON were pumping out the evils around the same time as the very first wave of early black metal began taking root deep within the Christian blood-soaked Norwegian soil. To be precise, VON’s roots can be traced back to 1987, approximately the same time thrash metal reached its pinnacle in the US. It’s strange to think that an American black metal band pre-dated such luminaries as BURZUM, EMPEROR, and ENSLAVED. It was some twenty years after their groundbreaking “Satanic" demo that VON’s influence could be felt in an explosive American West Coast scene. Band’s such as XASTHUR, WEAKLING, NACHTMYSTIUM, and LEVIATHAN all count VON as a major influence in their sound. With their latest album, entitled "Dark Gods: Seven Billion Slaves”, creator and mastermind, VENIEN (Jason Ventura), has tapped into his inner psyche and has willingly summoned many dark tales and ruthless hymns for the world’s seven billion slaves. The first of three volumes, dubbed Dark Gods Trilogy, Dark Gods showcases a band who have put a fair amount of time, effort, and intelligence into progressing their chosen art.

Previous outings were nothing more than brief bursts of fuzzed-out, toneless black metal - which was fine for what they were trying to achieve at the time, but certainly wouldn’t properly showcase the skills of current skinsman, and percussionist extraordinaire, Charlie Fell (Nachtmystium). Dark Gods is a step in the right direction for a band previously best known as that band Varg Vikernes sported on his t-shirt during one of his heavily publicized murder trial sessions way back in 1993.
